5. What should I do when my Lawn-Boy mower will not start?
a) Be sure you are using fresh fuel (less than 30 days old). The number one cause for problematic starting is old fuel. For more information on fuel and gasoline see question number 6.
b) Check to see that the spark plug wire is attached to the spark plug.
c) Check to see that the spark plug is clean and in good condition.
d) Check to see that the air filter is clean and in good condition.
e) If your unit has a battery (most do not), check to see that the battery is fully charged.
f) Review the starting procedures outlined in the operator's manual including the proper operation of the safety features of your unit, such as an operator presence bar.
g) If you continue to experience difficulties with the unit, contact your authorized Lawn-Boy Service Dealer for further assistance.

6. What type of fuel should I use? How do I know if I have fresh fuel?
Gasoline gets stale over time, often in as little as 30 days. Fresh fuel ignites more easily and keeps your fuel system from getting the harmful deposits that stale fuel leaves that may cause hard starting later. Today's gasoline does not have the same chemical makeup as in years past. Testing has shown that significant deterioration can begin in as little as 30 days. The volatile components of the fuel are the first to deteriorate and are needed to help an engine start easily.

For longer fuel life, we recommend using a fuel stabilizer, such as Sta-bil®. We recommend using unleaded regular grade fuel with a minimum octane rating of 85.

7. What type of oil should I use in my 2-cycle Lawn-Boy mower?
We recommend Lawn-Boy Generation II 2-cycle oil, mixed at ratio of 32:1 (add 4 ounces of 2-cycle oil to 1 U.S. gallon of gasoline), for all Lawn-Boy 2-cycle 1970 or newer engines. Only Lawn-Boy Generation II 2-cycle oil has been specifically formulated and tested for Lawn-Boy engines, ensuring that you will receive the best operating performance possible. Look for Lawn-Boy Generation II 2-cycle oil at your local Lawn-Boy retailer!

Wondering if your mower has a 2-cycle engine? You have a 2-cycle engine if you add oil to your gas and the engine does not have a dipstick. To verify this, go to the Master PartsViewer, enter your model number, then click on "View Product Features" link. On the left column most of the way down, find "Engine/Motor Type." To the right, it will indicate if you have a 2-cycle or other type of engine.

8. What type of oil should I use in my 4-cycle Lawn-Boy mower?
We recommend Lawn-Boy Premium 4-cycle Lawnmower Oil. Only this Lawn-Boy 4-cycle oil has been specifically formulated and tested for all Lawn-Boy 4-cycle engines and for optimum performance in today's high temperature engines. This high detergent oil meets or exceeds the American Petroleum Institute requirements SF/SG/SH/SJ/SL for SAE 30 motor oil. This oil protects and lubricates the engine in high temperatures also in cooling, cleaning and sealing the internal moving parts. Look for Lawn-Boy Premium 4-cycle Lawnmower Oil at your local Lawn-Boy retailer!

9. How do I change the oil in my Lawn-Boy 4-cycle?
Note: MAKE SURE THE FUEL TANK IS EMPTY OR LOW ON FUEL. If the fuel tank is full gas may leak out of the cap when tipping the mower.

a) Disconnect the spark plug.
b) The easiest and most effective way to drain the oil is to remove the dipstick and drain the oil out of the dipstick tube.
c) Place a shallow pan along side the mower, remove the dipstick and tip the mower, dipstick side down.
d) When the oil stops draining set the mower up and fill oil tube to the full mark on the dipstick. Most small engines hold less than a quart of oil, so pour some in and check the dipstick, then add as necessary.
e) Reconnect the spark plug.
